I Love My Brain Campaign

Since 2018, S.M.A.R.T. has been educating 3rd grade Briscoe students about the brain. At S.M.A.R.T. we know that understanding how your brain works leads to ownership of learning and healthier self regulation. Through the intersection of creativity and neuroscience we aim to democratize brain health and empower students for healthy emotional development.

The Beginning

In 2018 we invited two neuroscientists to come and speak to our students about the brain. Little did we know we would influence each other in magical ways. What began with one class grew into a beautiful partnership, transforming our programming and their career paths. Today, Doctors Bree Soteros and Amandine Grenier along with S.M.A.R.T., have evolved together, expanded programming and are dedicated to making brain health accessible while empowering young minds to understand the brain-heart connection.

Today: Art is Neuroscience

Programming

Today our creative programming is deeply interwoven with neuroscience. We begin peppering our students with brain education beginning in Pre-K. Teaching them how the brain heart connection helps us self regulate. When they reach 3rd grade they receive a 4 week brain education immersion in our Art is Neuroscience series. In this 4 week series we focus on the lobes, optical illusion art and emotional regulation, culminating in Brain Day - where the students get to experience a real human brain .

Annual Brain Fair

Spring is the time when the Briscoe Elementary gymnasium is transformed into a BRAINasium! This annual event engages the entire school population and their families. Full of sensory games staffed by our UTSA Department of Neuroscience students, fair goers experience, creativity, real brains, food and most of all FUN! Wathcing our families learn and play together is one of our favorite days!
